Jewelry designer Maya Brenner taught herself to make jewelry while working as a social worker in the 1990s, and a necklace she made for her mother blossomed into a full-on collection (and a big career pivot!). She’s since become one of the most successful and well-known “everyday” fine jewelry designers in the U.S., and helped pioneer the idea of personalized jewelry with her initial jewelry collections, which are still wildly popular.
We sat down with the Los Angeles-based designer to talk about how she views her business today, and what keeps her inspired as a designer and artist. —Melissa Magsaysay
