These Are the Superstar Lots in Christie’s Magnificent Jewels Auction

Christie’s 2021 Magnificent Jewels sale, which will happen live in New York City this Wednesday, corrals a stable of vintage jewels from venerable ateliers including Bvlgari, Cartier, Graff, Harry Winston, JAR, Jean Schlumberger, Suzanne Belperron, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels.

And in addition to the name-brand lots, three important colored diamonds will lead the sale: a rare 5.38 ct. fancy vivid orangey-pink diamond ring; a fancy vivid yellow 70.19 ct. diamond pendant; and a fancy dark gray-blue 8.74 ct. diamond ring. Each jewel is expected to fetch over $1 million!

There are also a few notable collections in the sale, including A Superlative Eye: Property from a Distinguished Chicago Collection, which features a strong selection of Art Deco-era Cartier jewels, and pieces from Graff, Jean Schlumberger, Chanel, Carvin French, and Marcus & Co. There will also be eight lots of Van Cleef & Arpels Mystery-Set jewels, including a ruby and diamond bracelet and a pair of ruby and diamond pendant earrings. The ‘Mystery-Set’ or ‘Serti Mystérieux’ was a technique innovated by Van Cleef & Arpels and perfected by only a few master jewelers (it takes an average of 1,200 hours to complete one Mystery-Set jewel, whoa).

Here are some of the auction’s most fascinating and/or valuable lots—they don’t call this sale “magnificent” for nothing.
